The National Crime Records Bureau has published a study entitled ‘Crimes in India-2019’. It noted that crimes against women increased by 7.3 percent in 2018-2019. The study also found that an average of 87 rape cases was reported daily.
Case Registered in India
In 2019, 4 lakh 5 thousand 861 criminal cases have been registered against women. That is 3 lakh 78 thousand 236 cases in 2018. A maximum of 59,853 cases of crimes against women have been reported in Uttar Pradesh. This is 14.7 percent compared to the number of reported cases nationwide. It was followed by Rajasthan with 41,550 cases (10.2 per cent), Maharashtra with 37,144 cases (9.2 per cent) and West Bengal with 30,394 cases.
Not only criminal cases but also cases of rape and crimes against girls continue. There were 33,356 rape cases in 2018 and 32,033 rape cases in 2019. Rajasthan has the highest number of rape cases (5,997). It was followed by Uttar Pradesh with 3,065 cases and Madhya Pradesh with 2,485 cases.
Crimes against girls have also increased. In Uttar Pradesh, 7,444 cases have been registered under the Pocso Act. It is followed by Maharashtra (6,402 cases) and Madhya Pradesh (6,053).
Crimes against children increased by 4.5 percent in 2019 compared to 2018. The vast majority of cases registered against women in 2019 are classified as crimes such as abuse by husbands or relatives (30.9 percent), assault on women (21.8 percent), and abduction (17.9 percent).
