In this post you can see how to safely clean silkworms at home.
- Always rinse your silk sarees with cold water. For normal rinsing, use a bucket of cold water and add a few drops of detergent to the water. Please use very mild soap as strong chemicals can damage the saree. Otherwise, you can use baby bath shampoo because it is free of any harsh chemicals.
- Soap berries and soap nuts or Reetha are the best natural alternative to use instead of soap to clean silk sarees. Soak 10 to 15 pieces of Reetha soap nuts overnight. Remove the seeds and press the pods until the soap starts to come out. Drain the solution and mix with cold water, soak the silk saree in the solution and rinse.
- Do not rub the silk saree too hard while rinsing, rub gently. Also, after washing, make sure there are no soap bubbles. Do not squeeze the saree after washing as they may leave permanent wrinkles.
- You may be wondering if you can rinse the silk in the washing machine? You can do this if your washing machine has a soft rotation option. You can wash silk sarees in the washing machine, but only delicately because silk is a very soft and delicate fabric.
- If your washing machine has silk / soft mode, you can select the mode and rinse the silk sarees. Never put silk sarees in the dryer. You need to let them air dry. If you are washing by machine, it is better to wash the saree only. Do not wash any other clothing that gives color, or thick fabrics such as jeans.
- Vinegar is an excellent tool for removing tea and coffee stains from silk sarees. Mix half a cup of white distilled vinegar with half a cup of water. Place the saree on a flat surface and apply the vinegar mixture over the stained area with a sponge or clean cloth. Pure vinegar may be used rather than the diluted version, especially for thick coffee or tea stains.
- Sweat stains are another persistent issue of silk sarees. When you get home after an event, use paper towels where there are sweat stains. After that, rinse with cold water using baby shampoo.
- If there are any food stains on the silk, you can use talcum powder on the stain as it will absorb the grease completely. Then you can wipe it with a sponge liquid soap and rub it on the stain and rinse it off.
- Never use bleach on silk sarees to remove any stains. Bleach is the absolute enemy of silk sarees and it damages the fabric. Not only that, it gives a dull look to the saree and will tear the fabric quickly.
